our History
Founded in 2021 by passionate educators committed to creating change, Project Sankofa emerged to address the critical gaps in support for Black students within existing educational institutions. Seeing the disparities firsthand, these educators formed the nonprofit to rally collective resources and provide holistic, culturally relevant services. Today, Project Sankofa continues to stand as a beacon for community empowerment, offering essential support at little to no cost to ensure that every Black student thrives, both academically and beyond.

The meaning behind our logo
Inspired by the Akan people of Ghana, the Sankofa bird embodies the spirit of learning from the past to shape the future. This bird flies forward while looking back, carrying an egg that represents the knowledge we inherit and pass on.
It’s a reminder that progress is rooted in understanding our history. At Project Sankofa, we honor this tradition by building a community where past wisdom guides future growth.
